Hike, then beer me!
It's still chilly in the Tetons...but so be it. We dressed in layers & drove up the Teton Pass for a gorgeous hike up to Ski Lake. Since we weren't in the park, Noco got to go; she's such a great trail dog. Yesterday, while we were at the Hatchet, we discovered Grand Teton Brew's Organic Au Natural. Deeeeelish! We found out that the brewery is on the other side of the pass, so after our sweet hike, we drove through a light snow to Victor, ID for a rewarding brewery tour & tasting...and this installment is a half-drunk post from their patio...
Grand Tetons
We learned that the Tetons were named by some French-Canadians...the name means "breasts"...apparently the travelers were a bit homesick? It is frickin freezing here! Good thing we packed some warm coats. We stayed at a resort east of the park & spent part of the next day walking around Jackson. The next night we found another little gem called the "Hatchet Resort"..good food, nice rooms. J got a fishing license & we headed up Togwotee Pass thru the world's longest road consruction project. By the time we got to the amazingly gorgeous mountain lake (Brooks Lake), it was almost dark & snowing! J got a few casts in while the dog ran & kp held the pistol for small comfort. It's grizzly land, beeeyotch.

Yellowstone
So..yeah...we roll into Yellowstone in a cold rain to find that our campsite reservation was entered as 7-28, not 8-28. (kp Had a glimmer of hope...) But, alas, there were plenty of sites available..of course! J made a fire, & kp made hot cocoa & hot ramen. Yummo...gourmet camping food! The park does a fantastic job of scaring the shit out of you regarding grizzlies, so between hearing night noises & the weather, no one slept that great, including our shivering guard dog. We lucked out the next day...the sun came out, traffic was light, and the park was toured in all its sulphurous splendor.

South Fork
We found a little hidden gem outside Buffalo, WY. South Fork Mountain Lodge is in the Bighorns next to Clear Creek. Jason tried flyfishing & got a few bites...seems they don't like SD hopperdroppers. Anyhow, we stayed in the "Elk" cabin, and Noco met her first mule, who roams the grounds because he refuses to stay in the corral. She was interested until he got close, then she was furiously trying to get the hell away. We hiked, then went to the lodge for an incredible dinner. They hire a summer chef, Alfredo, from South Beach Miami. He'll talk your ear off, then cook you a chino-latino style meal that will knock you over. Kristin hates shrimp cocktail, but his creation was divine! We had a nice morning hike, followed by a yummy Alfredo breakfast...now off to Jellystone!

Devil's Tower to the Bighorn Mtns
We hit Buffalo WY by lunchtime...it's a very cool little western town. There is a great vintage hotel called the Occidental Hotel that we will try next trip. (fyi "occidental" means western, or opposition to oriental...!) We had a buffalo burger at the original bar, & got a free soundcheck concert from some Nashville songwriter who was in town for a songwriting seminar. Even country-hater Jason was impressed (or maybe just drunk on love). While enjoying our concert lunch, Noco had her own lunch, consisting of our only phone charger & a lid to our water bottle, so we made some unplanned purchases...

We spent our first vacation night at a great campsite at Devil's Tower. What a gorgeous night!
